“Giving up is conceding that things will never get better, and that is not true. Ups and downs are a constant in life, and I’ve belted into that roller coaster a thousand times.” – Aimee Mullins
Let’s go for a ride. The pursuit of dreams is a lot like a roller coaster ride! Here are the top 10 things that will happen in both situations.
1. You’re scared!!
As you stare down the sign “THE SUPERMAN” it reads, your heart skips a beat. You think to yourself, hmm, sounds strong. You began to plead within about when was the last time this massive ride was serviced! You want to ask somebody but you don’t want to look like a coward who’s afraid of the unknown and unfamiliar.
2. You try to reason with yourself!!
As your eyes count the steps on the side of the coaster you begin to think, “Well look at here, these steps resemble a staircase to heaven! People were meant to walk the earth, right?! Because if we were meant to fly then we would have been given wings, right?
3. You’re uncomfortable!!
Baby steps you tell yourself as sweat trickles down your forehead. You follow the coaster with your eyes as you stand in line. Up the hill is goes, as your stomach begins to turn. The coaster hits the top of the hill and disappears in a cloud. Then seconds later it reappears with a bunch of screaming riders that you assume were standing exactly where you are at this very moment not long ago in the decision phase of choosing to continue to go or turning back.
4. You’re out of your comfort zone!!
Out of your comfort zone is an understatement as you notice the sign in front of you “If you have finally reached this point then you have approximately 20 minutes before riding”! At this point you begin to think about your beneficiaries, what you may be losing that you hold near and dear to your heart, all the things you’ve never done, all the places you’ve never gone, and the people you haven’t yet met as well as all the people who’ll be left behind. More importantly the familiar is looming in the background and slowly fading.
5. You being to try to convince yourself that you’re crazy or better yet you’re going crazy!!
This is the point in the line when you suddenly remember all the family stories your parents told you about dropping you on your head. But then, you question and ask the critical question of what’s really so wrong with being crazy. Some of the craziest people appear to have the most freedom and creative control over themselves. So what you may be feeling and going through may be causing you to feel crazy then, you’re definitely on the right path/course/journey.
6. You beat yourself up!!
The gate opens and you start to jump through the hoops of the mental gymnastics of verbally bashing yourself i.e. “I’m not good enough, I’m not ready to die, I’m not worthy, I’m not prepared, I don’t know what I doing, I don’t know – am I really ready??
7. You’re desperate, so you ask a stranger if they have a partner!!
As you cup your hands against your mouth and yell, “Anyone want to partner up!” When a twelve-year-old raises his hands you part the crowd for him to join you.
8. You doubt yourself!!
You poke out your stomach hoping that the ride attendant isn’t able to snap the seatbelt so that you’ll have to get off. When the seatbelt latches you try to make eye contact with the ride attendant but sadly she can’t hear your internal screams.
9. You feel vulnerable because you really are!!
You fight back your tears and begin to surrender and accept that this ride is completely NOW outside of your control. You are officially in the hands of the most High! Now you begin to over-share with your twelve-year-old coaster buddy who’s oblivious to your internal struggle/journey.
10. That’s it the ride is over!!
You unbuckle your seatbelt and smile, because the ride is over. You go to the bathroom and reevaluate yourself and see that in fact you are in one piece, whole and complete and those tears that you cried not so long ago have all dried up on your face!
Dreams are like roller coasters, the scariest part is waiting in line!
